First review: Bruno is gay, offensive ... and very funny

By Nick Curtis, None  18.06.09

Bruno premiere

Trooping the colour: Sacha Baron Cohen arrives in full Brüno regalia for the Leicester Square premiere

Bruno premiere

Show man: Bruno treats to waiting crowd

Bruno

Near the knuckle: Bruno is just as offensive - if not more - as Borat

Well, they did it. Sacha Baron Cohen and his wicked comic cohorts have produced a film that is funnier, more offensive, and more outrageous than Borat and the collected output of Ali G put together.

Bruno, which premiered in Leicester Square last night, leaves you gasping with its sheer, eye-watering effrontery. Gays, women, blacks, Jews, Muslims – this film is an equal-opportunities offender. It’s not great satire and treads mighty similar ground to the Borat movie. But Gott in Himmel, it’s funny.

Bruno is the third of Baron Cohen’s great, grotesque characters, a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion reporter and narcissist idiot. Sacked from his cable show Funkyzeit(YES) for destroying a Milan fashion show with his Velcro suit, Bruno sets out for the States, hungry for fame. Even if it means going straight.

Cue a series of vignettes that pastiche contemporary celebrity. Bruno tries to become a star interviewer, but offends La Toya Jackson (YES) by asking her to pretend to be her brother Michael. He tries to make a sex tape, much to the alarm of his chosen co-star, 73-year-old, right-wing republican Ron Paul.

A black baby imported from Africa (as luggage) gets Bruno on a Springer-esque cable show. But charitable attempts to broker peace in the Middle East founder when he confounds “Hamas” with “Hummus”.

As with Borat, part of the thrumming comic tension comes from not knowing who is, or isn’t, in on the joke. Did Bruno really ask an officer of the Al Aqsa Martrys’ Brigade to kidnap him to boost his profile? Or tell the Alabama National Guard their uniforms were too “matchy-matchy”? A visit to a swingers’ party feels staged. The denouement, where he snogs a man in front of the baying audience for a cage fighting match, feels dangerously real.

The satirical targets are fairly easy. It’s no great coup to get a homophobic rise out of redneck hunters, priests who “convert” gays, or protestors waving banners - a giveaway, surely - saying “God hates fags”. But it is, undoubtedly, hilariously bold to flirt with the first two groups, and accost the third while shackled to a male slave. Is Bruno a helpful tool for exposing homophobia or a harmful caricature? Both, probably. But above all, an appallingly funny creation.

Three things really stand out in the film, directed by Larry Charles. First is the sheer conviction with which Baron Cohen invests his magnificently stupid character. Who else could convincingly ask a mother if her baby could lose 10 lbs for a photoshoot? Or simulate an extended gay sex act (called a “rusty trombone” according to my companion) with a ghost? It’s incarnation, not acting.

Second is the sheer volume of excellent, taboo-splintering jokes and audacious parodic situations. Third, though, is the coda, in which Bruno records a staggeringly insulting charity single with Bono, Sting, Elton John, Slash and Snoop Dogg. These are the sort of people Baron Cohen used to dream of duping as Ali G. Now they’re mates called in for a favour by a fellow megastar. Bruno, genuinely hilarious and transgressive, caps his ten-year career as a comic provocateur. It’ll be fascinating to see what he does next.

Bruno is on general release from July 10.

I think it was really funny, It's showing everyone's outrageous bigotry and I've realised that a lot of people from different countries have totally different opinions. Like in the UK and Australia people love it, so do most americans but in China... they just don't get the same jokes we do.

I mean I remember the Ali G Show where Bruno interviewed a bunch of hot head beach boys and the boys were all into it and loved being on the camera until they found out it was for a Gay Austrian TV Show (That's what Bruno told them.) Then suddenly were against it.

Sacha tries showing everyone the problems with society using outrageous and funny characters.

- James, Perth, Australia

I watched this with my partner, who finds the most vile things funny, but this wasn't funny, even to him.

Plainy rubbish. Bring back Ali G.

- Yvonne, Manchester, England

Appalling? Yes. Outrageous? Yes. Shocking? Yes. It's all true - except the part about being funny. Because it isn't.

Bruno, like Borat, attempts to get most of it's laughs by putting other people in painful situations. The kind of people who think this is funny (There's some of them commenting above) probably laugh when someone else falls down or gets hit crossing the road. Anything's funny - as long as it isn't happening to THEM. It may also be that people have just seen so many movies that it's almost impossible to get a reaction any anything that DOES arouse a reaction is accepted as "good".

I kept waiting for the fun to start and it never did. It's just horrible, all the way through. The pseudo intellectuals celebrating this as an expose of homophobia haven't got a clue. It isn't homophobic to reject unwanted sexual advances or innuendo from ANY gender - the fact that it's your own gender doesn't make self-protection "homophobic".

Sacha is a clever guy and a great actor - possibly one of the best I've ever seen - but whereas Ali G has a lot of funny moments, Borat and then Bruno represent some of the worst examples of film making, the get-a-laugh at any cost while humiliating and embarrassing others (A technique pioneered by American shows like Candid Camera..)

In a strange kind of emperor's new-clothes sort of way, anyone criticising it is seen as homophobic...

- Jamie, China

I thought it would be horrible. I hate to admit it but it was hysterically funny if you can put aside your squeamish meter. Some of the German language spoofs were too funny to be described. Most of the pranks were totally harmless, as were his jokes about being gay. It was completely over the top and meant to be just that - larger than life over the top to offend nobody with any degree of seriousness. Yes, you might cringe for parts but it's damned funny.

- Ethan Hawk, Cambridge, UK

I loved this film! No matter what people say, no one can deny that it was extremely funny. This guy is a genious! He's one of the few people left in this world who isn't scared of offending people to make a good movie.

- Katrina, Southampton, UK

THIS FILM WAS AWFULL I DIDNT FIND IT FUNNY AT ALL AND IT DEFI NOT FOR THE STRAIGHT PEOPLE AND ALL THE JOKES AND STUFF RELATES TO GAY PEOPLE ITS MORE FOR THEM THERE HUMOR NOT FOR STRAIGHT PEOPLE, DEFI NOT WORTH THE PENNY TO WATCH IN CINEMA WHAT A WASTE, ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY

- I, UK

A great film, which I preferred to the Borat movie.
It attacks a whole range of taboos, from homosexuality and same-sex marriage to race; Cohen tackles it head-on.
I laughed throughout the film whilst covering my face.
Despite being sold-out not one person walked out, so I don't understand some of the other comments on this page.

Some of the middle-eastern stiff was different gear.

Go watch it!

- Paul, London

Sasha does highlight the very worst stereotypes of the gay society but thats why its so funny. He also did it with Ali G and Borat.
How do you think the 'Homeboys' and the east-bloc Europians felt?

- Jeroen Van Den Dorpe, Antwerp Belgium

This film is about as controversial as they come. I consider myself to be open minded but this film shocked me. I hadn't seen any clips or read any reviews before watching Bruno, merely relying on the experience of watching Cohen's previous work to suggest this might be worth a watch. I personally found Bruno funny for the most part but some of the scenes had me squirming in my seat and pondering leaving this one alone. This film will definitely offend many people who choose to watch it, whilst the most open of minds will find it unsettlingly funny. If you are considering watching this then I recommend reading a lot of reviews first, this film genuinely has the capacity to offend almost anybody!

- A Trappe, Liverpool, UK

Disgusting, daft, intelligent, sensitive, insensitive, outrageous, hilarious... it's all these and more. By creating characters as ultra-absurd as Borat and Bruno, Cohen can expose a host of absurd people and their antics... I don't for a second think gay guys and Austrians and are like this in real life! 'Resolving' the Israel-Palestinian problem concluding they both like 'hummus' (Hamas), pure genius. And as for defending that homophobic US politician, more fool you - why wasn't he man enough to just laugh and leave? Whatever silly stereotypes, phobias and issues you bring to Cohen's table, you'll have them turned back on you times 10! It's very much, the harder you 'think you are', the harder you fall.

- Martin, basingstoke, uk

Offensive (not to me, I'm open-minded), embarrassing, occasionally hilarious. Understandable that it's not to everyone's taste. I thought it was good. It made me laugh and occasionally squirm.

Personally, I am glad that comedians like Cohen exist, and that they expose the idiocy of others, while having fun and a laugh themselves.

P.s. Unlike the people who criticise the film, I don't have a sense of humour.

- Mike, London

Absolute rubbish...please don't waste your time or your money. I'm not a prude and i have a sense of humour but this film was disgusting and crude and definately not funny just offensive.

- Kim, cheshire

A real shocker....Borat was funny, but this was a waste of money and time. I should have read the reviews first as I had no idea the scenes were going to be that graphic. At one point in the movie I could not believe this type of movie could actually be shown to an audience. Some things you just dont want to see......

- Mark, Cape Town, South Africa

This kind of thing has been done before. Maybe not this content, but close to it... Anybody remember Andy Kaufman?

- Dave, Boston, US

I think this movie was brilliantly thought-out and executed. It does an amazing job of exposing our prejudices. I mean "we" as in the viewers. I just watched this in the theatre where 3/4 of the people walked. They're taking the movie far too literally and not bothering to read between the lines.

Everyone has been bashing this movie as a "gay porn". But no one seems to be pointing out there was almost as much female nudity. And the gay stereotypes being offensive? If you're offended by that, then why arent you offended of the straight stereotypes of the army, rednecks and MMA fighting events. Surely, not all men are that testosterone-driven just as not all gay men are that flambouyant etc..

Baron Cohen being jewish himself protraying a clearly anti-semetic Borat should clearly show that he's not affraid of provoking people's biases. I thikn people should watch this movie knowing its not his attempts to degrade any one lifestyle/culture. However, i beleive it was his intention to offend those with biases however much we're aware of them - and he did an amazing job.

Those are my opinons, youre welcome to share them with me or not. I just feel this film is being read at face value and most are too shocked to read a little deeper into what he's doing. To those of you who are too easily offended and are not comfortable enough to deal with racism/sexuallity.. stay home and don't watch the movie!

- Morgan, Canada

He once again pushed the limits even further. His unmistakeable braveness and his ablity to keep a straight face at all times and to really zone into such a polar character from Borat paid off. An jaw awing comedy, i watched it twice. Well done Sacha Baron Cohen

- Joe, Scotland, UK

Bruno was a filthy, painful waste of time. I cannot believe I was stupid enough to not read a review about it first. It was 60 minutes of vile filth, abhorrently offensive, brainless: a waste of $17. If CHILD ABUSE offends you, if graphic HOMOSEXUAL PORNOGRAPHY offends you (just a straight porn would offend someone - no Im not homophobic) and If watching real COUPLES Have SEX and S&M scenes offends you(although some may be turned on by this), and RELIGIOUS VILIFICATION and RACISM offends you, then PLEASE DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE. Little Britain was funny, Summer Heights High was funny, We Can Be Heroes is funny.... This is NOT. For me who has a high tolerance to "unique" movies, and I "get satire", in fact i love it. But I found this INHUMANE and PUTRID. It was an ASSAULT to my senses, my ears and my eyes. To see a "Black Baby" by the name of "OJ", being crucified on a cross, and a penis that fills the screen. Shame on the musos (Bono??) at the end who supported the Cruelty, Ignorance and Hate in this movie. It is very sad that it relies on extreme antics. Yes I "get it", No it is not right: BOYCOTT BRUNO.

- Molly, Melbourne, AUstralia

One of the worst films I have seen. Should have stopped with the success of Borat

- Ruth, Perth, Scotland

Utter rubbish, do not waste your time or money. Yes I do have a sense of humour & no I am not a prude or homophobe. This film is just not funny, its just crude & lazy... Sacha Baron Cohen was funny a few years ago & I enjoyed his early stuff , but its all getting a bit boring now. He has made fun of urban youth, foreign nationals & now the gay community. I wonder if he would ever do a film/character about the negative stereotypes some people hold about the Jewish people (ie his people)... nah, somehow I don't think he would ever touch that 'taboo' subject and its much easier to make fun of others...

- Harry, London, UK

I was in total awe of sheer fearlessness of Sasha. I'd be so scared to get pummeled by those rednecks. (I didnt even know there existed something like a 'gay converter', although i'd bet a 100 euros on HIM being secretly gay.)

This film was a blast, although I can imagine that some ppl might think he crossed the line. But remember that Sasha doesnt hurt anyone, it's only his presence which offends certain ppl and that is their problem, not Sasha's

- Bas, Eindhoven, Netherlands

I love Sacha Baron Cohen's intellect, splendid physique, & talent. Saw him in Sweeny Todd & Talladega Nights, but have missed Borat & Da Ali G show, so I still have a lot of his previous work to enjoy. But I prefer subtle satire to farce/slapstick as a form of comedy, and am bored by stereotypes, although an outrageous gay queen in fabulous costume can't help being great fun. Still, I'm afraid this movie could actually promote homophobia among the clueless (who abound). In terms of film structure, the character is so relentlessly determined to offend everything & everybody, this plot device becomes tedious after a while. Nevertheless, I laughed my head off throughout, and winced as well. Can't help thinking that this great comedian is "working out", as they say in Therapy Land, all the rages and inhibitions that must have gone into being from an orthodox Jewish family and growing up in historically repressive English society. Plus being extremely tall, brilliant and gorgeous - they try to kill you just for that! Now that he's broken most of the major taboos, earned a fortune, and gotten VERY famous, I'm hoping he'll lay back, bide some time, and get subtle. And of course I'll follow everything he does, if they (the ubiquitous "they") let him live...

- Carolyn Fabricant, North Adams MA, USA

If any of you were bright enough to notice, although it may seem like a crude, exploitative film intent on mocking gays, it actually does quite the opposite. To be honest, I found it hilarious (though yes, a tad inappropriate at times). Cohen was not making fun of homosexuality- he was exposing homophobia in its most raw form. For those who say that this film is "retarded" or a lowering in standard from Borat, then you are probably right if watching the film superficially. But Cohen is not as dumb, or as much of a sell-out, as you all seem to believe- under the guise of comedy, he illustrates a controversial issue and the problems surrounding it. Yes, Bruno is a caricature and stereotyping of queer people- but in the end, are we happy he finds Lutz again and makes up with him? Are we more accepting of queer culture?
I can say that I am, and I'm sure many other people see the underlying message of this film- I'm sure many other people realise Cohen's intentions to mock homophobia.

And plus, I bet you laughed when he fell out that window or that penis started spinning around. Because that was funny, crude, yet hilarious. I don't think there was anyone not laughing in the cinemas. So shush, and take a joke! Seriously people

- Rebecca, Sydney, Australia

Bruno was terrible. It was advertised as a comedy. It should have been advertised as a really bad gay porno film. The movie was disgusting. I would have preferred paying to have my eyes gashed out!

- Vera Willow, Cincinnati, United States

1st of all, i would like to say that after watching the movie i was speechless. i expected a movie that was as funny as the reviews but the movie i saw was pointless let alone weird. I walked out of the theather and i asked my mother what it was about. Now i will give credit to Sacha that he did manage to shock his viewers but this movie was a complete waste. Sacha is not stupied and i dont think he thought to do a retarded movie but he somehow manage to let the fame from borat allow him to make a retarded movie. I think everyone should see the movie because noone will believe how stupied the movie is unless they see it. When i saw the preview i couldnt wait to see. I thank God i did see it because that movie made me lose all respect for Sacha. I think Sacha will never be forgiven for people for his work. But honestly, I just want to say to all the people out there who may hate Sacha or feel offended by his work, YOU CANT TAKE HIS WORK TO HEART. he is a comdien and he just tried to make us laugh. Although he failed at it you have to give him credit for waxing his whole body for this film. If you saw borat you would know how hairy he is. Anyway, Sacha i love you but Bruno...WTF.LOVE YOU.

- Rana, New York, United States of America

Thankfully the entertainment and movie industry can readily harvest a bountiful supply of drool-bucket wearing consumers whom they have shamelessly programmed to feed pleasurably off of the narcissistic exploitation of the regular person’s demand for their 5 minutes of predestined fame and the insatiable appetite of the already famed who would willing give up their dignity, and artistic integrity to readily associate with the debasing in order to bask in the spotlight for just a few minutes more.

What next…Gladiators beating and near killing each other…extreme fighting and Wrestle mania here we come.

The future is bright for Hollywood as they amorally and gleefully serve up another steaming dose of gruel to the hungry masses…”give us more they say”, as they run their tin cups against the imprisoning bars…give us some more torture…Youth Hostel and Saw are great…We love Snoop and lyrics about hurting people…and by the way…give us more car crashes and murder details on the daily news…we love learning about crime on CSI…we grow restless and satisfy our darkest desires…

- Steve, Los Angeles

I was completely bored and sickened by this pornographic display. The higher purpose, I'm sure, alluded most people. If Mr. Cohen had a higher purpose, that is, to "expose" homophobia, he shouldn't have exposed so much. I really didn't need to see the graphic details of all kinds of sex, to get his point. It seemed a staged and desperate bid to keep making money off the shock value of blatant exposures. I agree, that it did much more to alienate people to the gay movement and was probably very offensive to many nice gay couples. If this is to become mainstream entertainment, then I would highly reconsider many gay issues facing the ballot. Shame on the theaters for not posting disclaimers! In this case, the lure of the mighty dollar has won over good common sense! I could go on....

- Deanna, Los Angeles, United States

Horrible, unimaginative, cruel, stupid. Possibly the worst movie it has been my misfortune to see. I cannot fathom how anyone could consider it "good" in any way. The sooner it's out of theaters and subsequently relegated to the "20 DVD's for $1.50" box at BlockBuster, the better.

- Sheila, Portland, Oregon, USA

I found it to be quite funny, and I happen to be gay.
He wasn't making fun of homosexuals, he was making fun of societies outlook and intolerance.

- Trevor, Cambridge, UK

Saw the movie this weekend with friends . Walked out as soon as the movie started. The whole movie is just mocking gays . I liked borat very funny movie but, bruno very disgusting.

- Alisa Suljic, Atlanta, ga

THIS MOVIE SUCKS! Borat was much funnier, I enjoyed that movie and watched it many times. So I decided I would spend the $10.50 to see this in theatres, well, it was awful. It was so offensive, disgusting, and downright crude. It was an extremely lame excuse for humor, and everything was staged, it was not real like Borat was. I loved Borat, but Bruno was TERRIBLE, I would advise people to wait until it comes out on DVD if even that, and I find it appauling that so many people actually enjoyed this terrible, terrible film.

- Andrew, Boston, USA

I saw this movie today. I was in disgust from the beginning. Everyone I knew wanted to see it. The advertisements looked hilarious and all my friends couldn't wait to see this 'comedy'.
Throughout the whole movie, I think i laughed about twice or thrice but was disgusted and had to cover my eyes maybe 12 times.
He lost the plot! Went way too far with all the gay, Jewish and Palestinian jokes. I am not impressed.
I LOVED Borat and thought it was hilarious but Bruno went way over the top and turned comedy into idiocy.

- Sam, Sydney, Australia

Unlink Borat, Bruno is a one trick pony. With Borat, you had a character who was tolerated long enough to expose the prejudices of a number of groups. With Bruno, the interview is over before it has even begun, so get a stilted set of very, very short scenes which neither allows the character or his stooges to be developed in any meaningful way. The graphic images and content didn't offend me, it was the fact that I did not find if funny that offended me most.

- Graham, London, UK

As a gay man I am very proud to live in the UK, a country which has fought homophobia on every level and in part, been successful in changing general perception and giving us the rights we deserve.
My partner and I went to see Bruno this weekend and I think we are still in shock by what we saw!

What could have been a funny, quick witted parody highlighting homophobia and prejudice became nothing more than a film about a straight man pretending to be gay and feeding to the very prejudice we have fought so hard to combat. This film is nothing more than a straight man highlighting the very worst stereotypes of what a gay man is, only confirming to many on how we are perceived to behave. Why as a country are we rejoicing in humour that offends and roots further prejudice in those we are trying to prove wrong? Cant anyone see that?

In 2009, do we really think it acceptable to mock the Jews, Palestine, the gay community. I have always been a fan of Sacha but sadly, I am upset, appalled and disgusted……. The damage a film like this can cause is far reaching.

It’s a shameful way to make money out of the minority groups and you should be utterly ashamed of yourselves. Pathetic……… I can imagine huge backlash over this movie… Bring it on!

- Stephen, London, UK

I found the film funny in parts but I wasn't mightily impressed. I definately enjoyed Borat a lot more as this film did push the boundaries beyond humour in parts. I wouldn't say it was the funniest film ive seen this year as I enjoyed Hangover a lot more but it's worth seeing as long as you don't mind 90mins of gay jokes.

- Al Cariotti, Birmingham, UK

I am gay and I was completely disgusted by this film, so please don't call Bruno "gay porn." The point was to offend people and it probably just screwed the gay stereotype deeper into the mind of the population if you think this is something to be enjoyed... The movie was an F+ at best, but probably the one of the worst films I have ever seen. I loved Borat, but this was just trash. The best parts of the movie were in the previews; the only parts appropriate for TV. Can you even believe this movie is only R rated?

- M.T, Los Angeles, CA

Although I personally preferred Borat, there is no denying that with Bruno Sacha Baron Cohen has reached a legendary status. In a time where it is politically incorrect to say "retarded," Cohen uses every slur in the book. No topic is sacred. I feel that all of Cohen's work, from Ali G to Bruno, has been absolutely necessary in our times. Hopefully Cohen's work will never be forgotten.

- Charlie, Mt. Vernon, US

excellent movie! two thumbs up!
Bruno is an excellent work of satire that accomplishes exactly what it sets out to acheive, to tweak the noses of narrow-minded bigots.

- Bobby Hendrick, San Marcos, TX

I was talked into watching this movie by a few friends. I walked out soon after the swinging penis.

Lame excuse for humor.

- Disgusted, TX

No one should ever go see this movie. It was a waste of 2 hours of my life and 20 bucks. Its a gay porn from begining to end. The only funny parts are on the tv previews. Don't see this and waste your time or money. Borat was a million times better.

- Joe, us

I loved this movie, I thought it was the funniest movie I have ever seen.
2 thumbs up (the rear) lol

- Andrea, Mobile, Al

What a ruin of a evening!! absolute trash. Didnt expect it to be a gay blue movie!!! Thanks for wasting our money. Wish I had read the reviews on this page before going to watch it. Walked out 45 min too late.Thank goodness my 18 yr old daughter and her boyfriend had other plans and didnt join us. I fail to see the humour in that rubbish.

- Kim Butler, Orlando, Fl

Saw this film last night, and it has a terrible storyline, its scenes are strung together all higgledypiggledy, BUT by golly it was the funniest thing I have ever seen in the cinema. I was expecting something of lower standard than Borat, but Baron Cohen has outdone himself here. I really want to know which scenes were staged and which weren't though, because I'd be disappointed if the majority of it was, as the comedy lies in the fact it isn't....

- Martin, Wandsworth, UK

Ron Paul IS a right-wing politician of the worst ilk - a provincial narcissist whose followers are just as much so and avowed players of an inequal game who read waaay too much Ayn Rand and not enough of Paul's history, or voting record. All you have to do to see that is to look at his voting record.

I always like this link: http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/wrong_paul.html

I'm so glad that Baron Cohen has a go at exposing a political fraud whose followers are more dangerous than he will ever be.

- Kevin, Georgia

Gemma is right on the money

- Todd Mckellar, Wellington, NZ

They are not laughing with you, they are laughing at you.

- Jack, San Francisco, United States

Ron Paul is a fine man and probably the only honest politician in America. If America had more people in politics like him, freedom and liberty would be in the ascendency in the West rather than in decline.

- Bill Smith, London

Just wanted to clarify Ian's incorrect post. Ron Paul is as right wing as they come.I'm looking forward to seeing Dr. Paul made a fool of in "Bruno." He certainly deserves it!

- Jeff, Chicago, Illinois

Pathetic garbage, shameful to admit I watched the entire film. His first movie was funny without crossing the line too far. This was utterly disgusting.

- John Frasier, NY, NY

Just so everybody knows, Ron Paul is NOT a right-wing politician.

He IS a republican but far, far away from the right.

Its a shame because Ron Paul is one of the most liberal and progressive voices in the States.

Anyway, I hope that his appearance in Bruno will at least make people do some of their own research into his politics.

Thanks, Ian.

- Ian Allardyce, Forest Hill, London

oh his films do have a meaning somewhere hidden deep inside. you just have to see past all the "moronic" parts. true he seems like going way over the line every time, but that is what makes him what he is.
in my eyes, a legend. a true genius at work. a very methodical artist. keep on shocking the moviegoers everywhere mr cohen. cant wait to see this one either.

- Faisal Malik, karachi, pakistan

utter trash - do not find this moron funny in he leas - and yes i have got a sense of humour

- Cathy, southampton united kingdom

I saw this both last night at the premier and about three months when it was a work in progress. This film is simply brilliant. I don't care who you are: you're going to be shocked by this film. Parts of this film are so appallingly embarrassing you're going to have to screw youre eyes shut and stick your fingers in your ears. Seems to me he's just having a lot of fun and is happy to take the piss out of everyone and everything (including himself). This film is pretty much without meaing of any kind (in my opinion): it's just moronic entertainment and no less brililant as a consequence. I do feel though that it is a little cruel at times (see Ron Paul scene) but this is a minor criticsim. Overall a brilliant film and I will enjoy every little bit of pious whining and bitching from all the groups who feel offended.

- Dale Walden, london uk

Oh Joe et al lighten up!! It's just a bit of fun. The guy is a genius. He's very, very funny. So far all of his characters have made me laugh and I have a very dry sense of humour. I loved him from the days of the 11 O'clock show. I for one cannot wait to see this film.

- N, Twickenham

Ha ha ha, I ca't wait to watch this film, just the photos are making me laugh. As for all you killjoys out there and people with no sense of humour, shut up until youve seen it.....

- Dc, Ealing, London

were you invited to the premiere Joe?

because if you haven't seen it, your comments speak more of you than the film itself...

- Scott, London

I can´t see anything funny in Cohen or any of the characters he portrays. It must be me . . . . . . . . . .

- Graham Rodhouse, Helmond, Netherlands

"Yet more mediocre trash no matter what the promotional propaganda will have us believe!"

You've seen it, have you?

- Michael, London

"He has quite simply lost the plot."

To be fair Joe, I don't think he ever had the plot to begin with - but that's what makes him so funny!

- John, London

Ah Joe. I thought I was the only one on the planet who does not find him funny. Did briefly when he was initially famous but now nope.

- Ethan, UK

Cohen is single-handedly fronting this countries movement towards equality. Using this grotesque stereotype , he cleverly exposes homophobia and induces a huge audience to laugh at and alienate the offender. As far as I am concerned, he has the licence to utilise this potentially harmful caricature for the greater good of queer people everywhere.
