The Yes Men Fix The World
Conmen with a good cause: Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno

By Derek Malcolm
7 Aug 2009

Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno would probably like to call themselves conmen in a good cause.

In this fly-on-the-wall documentary, Andy poses as a Dow Chemicals spokesman announcing that the corporation will clean up the site of the Bhopal chemical spill catastrophe of 1984 — which causes the company’s stock value to plummet by two billion dollars.

As Exxon representatives, he and Mike demonstrate a new biofuel made from the bodies of climate-change victims.

Their critics, seemingly hooked by the system which decrees that an unregulated market is the root of all happiness, accuse them of arrogance and cruelty. It would be easier to call them starry-eyed.

This is often a very funny film, made more relevant by a recession which began after the film was made. Michael Moore should watch out — he has competition.
