'Birth of pro-surfing' revealed in Bustin' Down The Door

Hawaii’s North Shore
Surfer’s paradise: Hawaii’s North Shore

Actor Ed Norton has the most whiny voice on the planet, which makes him the perfect narrator for this half-gushy, half-revealing “birth of pro-surfing” documentary, starring the likes of Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew and Ian Cairns.

These sportsmen (mostly Aussies) have always seen themselves as pioneers and iconoclasts. They come across as a bunch of borderline racist loons.

They were bent on turning Hawaii’s dangerous North Shore into a scary father figure they could test themselves against and, of course, beat.

Despite the group’s many successes, self-pitying tears are rarely far from their eyes. It’s fascinating stuff and unfathomably bleak.
