Description: Cal is part of a gang of youths who mix drugs and violence, and express themselves through brutality. He has managed to conceal his homosexuality from the other members of his posse, including his best mate Jonno. When Cal rescues French exchange student Olivier from a beating, the touch-paper is lit for a passionate affair between the two boys, which culminates in an act of shocking brutality.

The director of Shank is 21 but he’s an old-timer compared with most of the cast (many of them untrained).

His desire to make us understand “gay bashing” among Bristol teens is worthy but the end result is clunky and contrived.
