Cert: PG

Description: Mariella Frostrup narrates a documentary charting the life cycle of the lesser flamingo at northern Tanzania's isolated Lake Natron. Chicks emerge into a hostile landscape where salt deposits from the lake can turn into shackles on their legs, condemning some youngsters to an early grave. While parents attempt to keep their little ones safe, marabou storks and other predators mercilessly pick off the stranglers.

Matthew Aeberhard’s documentary traces, with some stunning cinematography, the yearly gathering of one-and-a-half million flamingos on the shores of Lake Natron in Tanzania.

The lake, and the mountains beside it, are spectacular but the birds seem quite as extraordinary as those penguins we’ve all seen on the screen.

Unfortunately, the film is accompanied by a dire commentary spoken by Mariella Frostrup in hushed tones and a score that too often lapses into string-infested gloop. Amazing to look at, though.
