Couples Retreat is a silly tale

By Derek Malcolm, Evening Standard  16.10.09

Couples Retreat

Rom-com: Malin Akerman, Vince Vaughan

The terrible Love Happens is succeeded this week by an even worse romantic comedy, from Peter Billingsley.

The debutant director is done no favours by a screenplay from Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau which gives him little to play with and them few chances to shine as actors.

Couple Retreat centres on four Midwestern couples who embark on a trip to a luxury island paradise.

One pair (Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell) are at a crossroads in their marriage; the others simply want sun, sea and spas.

Instead, they are faced with Jean Reno’s ludicrous “couples whisperer” — a relationship guru — on day one and told to obey his every instruction or leave.

And thereby hangs a tale too silly to explain as the couples come to terms with each other’s foibles.
