Imagination evident in Ponyo

Hayao Miyazaki, the brilliant Japanese animator of Princess Mononoke and the Oscar-winning Spirited Away, is never afraid to mix naturalistic detail with out-and-out fantasy, which is why this children's film, hand-drawn throughout, appears so original and charming.
Dubbed with largely American voices, including those of Matt Damon and Cate Blanchett, it has Noah Cyrus as Ponyo, a goldfish girl escaping from a deep-sea coral tower on to dry land and falling for five-year-old Sosuke (Frankie Jonas) who lives with his parents beside the sea.
It may be a feelgood story but it's the stunning animation and the director's imagination that take the eye.

Another masterpiece by Miyazaki: as usual the animation is wonderful; the mood and imagery captures your imagination for long after seeing the film. I need to see it again in a few months before I can really tell whether it is up to the standards of Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke.
I wholeheartedly recommend it as a change from Hollywood and for the values of loyalty and enivronmentalism (but not rammed down your throat) that are common in Miyazaki's films.

Cate Blanchett is Australian, not American.
