Mirren studied hours of television footage in order to deliver an effective imitation of the monarchs self-controlled features.

The actress had to age herself 10 years in order to play the Queen who was struggling with overnight vilification in the media.

Sylvia Syms appears in the role of the frail but supportive Queen Mother.

The drama plays out mainly at Balmoral, the Queens Scottish retreat, as the Royals withdraw from the national outpouring of grief.
