Celebrating the year of the rat

Chinese New Year Festival, 10 February, various locations

China in London, 6 February - 6 April

With our own celebrations now consigned to memory, next month it will be the turn of London's Chinese communities to welcome in their own New Year.

Based on the Chinese calendar that represents twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, 2008 is the Year of the Rat, and a number of events are planned in and around the capital.

The festival begins with a parade in the Strand at 11am that passes along Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue.

This is followed by family entertainment in Trafalgar Square from 12-6pm, including contemporary street performers. Naturally, Chinatown will also be getting in on the act with cultural stalls and Lion Dance displays.

The festival comes at the start of a two-month China in London season, with events covering Chinese culture and the link between the Beijing 2008 Olympics and the hand-over to London 2012.
