London for free: Twelfth Night Festival

Twelfth Night Festival
Bankside, SE1, Sunday, from 12.45pm
(www.thelionspart.co.uk)
Free.

This annual Bankside event bids goodbye to the Yuletide season and celebrates the beginnings of a New Year.

A "Holly Man", decked out in leafy green foliage, leads the crowd from the Thames along Bankside, followed by a celebratory folk performance.

After this, cakes are distributed to the audience - one containing a bean, another a single pea, according to tradition.

The recipients are then crowned King and Queen for the day, and the party proceeds on to Borough High Street for storytelling, dancing and general merrymaking. And that's that for another year.
