Forget the London Triathlon. An anarchic alternative event which involves biking abseiling, running, climbing and kayaking around the city is coming to London for the first time.

The Rat Race Urban Adventure is a gruelling challenge involving teams of three navigating their way around a course.

Exact challenges and locations are secret until the day of the race, but competitors will be expected to climb statues, abseil from buildings, wade through fountains and kayak on waterways.

The 10-hour race will span nine London boroughs and will take place on the last weekend of next month. The Rat Race began four years ago in Edinburgh where the streets and buildings were transformed into an impromptu course.

The mixed teams of three are mainly from sports and adventure clubs and companies and will compete to win £20,000 worth of prizes and a trip to Trinidad and Tobago.

Jim Mee, an extreme events specialist who runs Detail Events in Westbourne Park, started the race. He said: "There is an awesome adventure in store for those who come on the journey with us."

Entry starts at £35 for the Prologue Rookie Race and £99 for the full two-day event. There will be a family area at Potters Field Park next to City Hall.
