O2 turns into Springfield for premiere

The Simpsons Movie gets its UK premiere tonight.

The 02 centre, formerly the Millennium Dome, will be transformed into Springfield for the occasion.

Guests will enter through a giant sculpture of Homer's mouth and walk down a yellow carpet to the venue's cinema.

Doughnut-loving dad Homer, his blue-haired wife Marge and their children Bart, Lisa and Maggie are all on the invitation list.

The plot sees Homer and his pet pig spark an environmental disaster by accidentally polluting the river in Springfield.

Last week's world premiere took place in Springfield, Vermont.

The town was chosen ahead of 13 other real-life Springfields to host the event.

The movie is destined to be one of the biggest comedies of the year.

The Simpsons started out as a sketch on the Tracey Ullman Show in 1987 and became stars of their own show in 1989.

Eighteen seasons, 400 episodes and 23 Emmys later, creator Matt Groening has come up with the first full-length Simpsons film.

Homer has become an unlikely hero - in 2003, he beat Abraham Lincoln to be named the greatest American in a BBC online poll, while Time magazine named The Simpsons the best television show of the 20th century.
