Scorched set to heat things up at Old Vic Tunnels
01 September 2010
Since the Old Vic acquired the cavernous, labyrinthine space under Waterloo Station that has become the Tunnels in February this year, the venue has cast off the shackles of suspected gimmickry to become a valuable proving ground for artistic talent in the capital – not to mention another savvy move by the Old Vic under Kevin Spacey's Artistic Direction.
The premier of Banksy's Exit Through The Gift Shop at the Tunnels gave the much-needed buzz, and the last theatrical offering, Beth Steel's Ditch, demonstrated its capability as a venue for great theatre.
And this looks set to continue this month with the opening of Scorched from 6 September.
The play, from Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad, arrives in the UK from Canada already heavily laden with critical acclaim, and a film adaptation, Incendies (the play's original French title) by Canadian art house director Denis Villeuve, is set for its debut at the Venice Film Festival.
The plot follows the journey of Janine and Simon Marwan, following on from the death of their mother. When they are left the task of delivering two letters, one to their father – long thought dead – and a brother they never knew existed, the siblings are drawn into the emotional history of a family ravaged by civil war.
Strongly influenced by Mouawad's past – he fled war-torn Lebanon as a child with his family, and the play is inspired by an attack on a bus he witnessed before they fled – Scorched has been hailed for its power and honesty, and for the multi-generational resonance of its simple, vital message of forgiveness.
With the experienced hand of the Dialogue Theatre Company staging the production, the exhaustive creative possibilities afforded by the Tunnels performance space and the added clout of Old Vic backing, Scorched looks set to live up to the expectations.
Scorched by Wajdi Mouawad runs at The Old Vic Tunnels, Waterloo, from September 6 to October 2, with previews on September 3. Tickets £25 adult, £20 concession, £12 children. www.oldvictheatre.com
