Mayor Ken Livingstone said: "London is one of the best cities in the world to visit at Christmas and the New Year's Eve fireworks display is world famous. It is one of the hundreds of attractions taking place which make London the most exciting city in the world."

The free event is accessible to all, and over 250,000 people packed the banks of the Thames to watch last year's display.

Crowds begin to gather from 8pm, with many of the best spots gone by 9.30pm, so get there early to guarantee a good view. The BBC will be showing the event live for those who prefer to watch in a bit more warmth and comfort.

This year's fireworks will be the work of internationally renowned pyrotechnician Christophe Berthonneau.

Revellers are advised to travel by public transport rather than car, as road closures will be in place from 6pm. Information about free, and through the night travel on New Year's Eve will be released by Transport for London in the coming weeks.
