Winter wandering
16 January 2008
Transport for London (TfL) is funding the walks, which are organised by Walk London.
All the walks start and finish at a bus stop, Tube or railway station. They follow mainly traffic-free routes and connect some of London's best attractions, parks and open spaces, as well as a number of rivers.
There are break-off points on all the walks for those who would rather take a shorter route. Organisers advise anybody who wants to do the full walk to bring a packed lunch with them.
Here are TfL's top five walks:
Enfield (North) Cockfosters to Enfield Lock
Starts: Saturday at 9.45am at Cockfosters station
Time: Four hours
Length: 8.5 miles
This rural route from Cockfosters to Enfield Lock takes in picturesque Trent Park. There's a climb on to The Ridgeway and then a descent down to the Turkey Brook with some long-ish slopes.
Havering (East) Upminster Bridge to Rainham
Starts: Sunday at 11.30am at Upminster Bridge station
Time: 2.25 hours
Length: Four miles
From Upminster Bridge to Rainham, this walk follows the River Ingrebourne through to Hornchurch Country Park and is mostly on level tarmac or gravel paths.
Merton (South) Wimbledon Park to Richmond
Starts: Saturday at 10.30am at Wimbledon Park Tube station
Time: Four hours
Length: 7.5 miles
Take in the scenery and cafés along the route from Wimbledon Park and Common to Pen Ponds in Richmond Park. Mainly on rough tracks or paths and grass with some quite long and fairly steep ascents and descents.
Hounslow (West) Osterley Lock to Greenford
Starts: Sunday at 11am at Boston Manor station
Time: 3.5 hours
Length: 5.5 miles
This easy walk along the River Brent takes in the Wharncliffe viaduct and Hanwell church spire, finishing at Rockware Avenue.
City Walk 1 (Central) Tower Hill to Ludgate Hill
Starts: Saturday at 11am, opposite the EAT café next to the Tower of London ticket office
Time: Two hours
Length: 4.5 miles
On this guided tour around the City of London you will see many of its distinctive buildings, including the Gherkin, the Monument, the Bank of England, Mansion House, St Paul's Cathedral and the Central Criminal Court.
