Barnet's best is a football-free zone
13 June 2007
If you're not into big screen football its sometimes a frustrating task to have a relaxing weekend pint in Barnet.
However, if you're prepared to venture a little off the High Street, the Lord Nelson is not only usually football free but also the best pub in Barnet by a long way.
Tucked off an anonymous looking road, it was quite a surprise to find such a lovely pub, its interior appropriately festooned with anything vaguely nautical or watery - barometers, paintings of ships - even bath taps.
Two beautiful model boats sit in the window alongside fresh flowers, while a scattering of Tiffany lamps create a warm, glowing atmosphere.
There're no 'locals only' stares here (well, apart from the pub dog) - just relaxed regulars and pleasant service.
Along with three well-kept ales, you'll find some really great food, prepared by the landlady herself. Repeated visits have nudged this into becoming Barnet's first (and only) five-star pub.
FOOD REVIEW: Small traditional menu, such as Lamb shank for £5 - yes a fiver - and various desserts, including Jam roly poly, for £2.50. Everything excellent. Served every day until 9pm (ish).
CLIENTELE: skewed slightly towards older locals
