Don't overlook Stamfords
11 March 2009
We have passed by Stamfords umpteen times over the years without entering. Why is that? It may be the modest facade within a low-rise sixties concrete precinct: the red door on the street is in fact the back door. It may be the opaque windows: what are they hiding? It may simply be the presence of two decent real ale pubs close by (the Mad Hatter, and Doggett's). Whatever the case, we finally ventured in one Friday lunchtime.
Despite certain features like the black-and-white autographed photos, it doesn't feel cliched or dated. It gets crowded on Fridays, but otherwise it's apparently quite quiet, with cosy booths as well as ample table space (note that they sometimes close early in the week, depending on patronage, but also due to private bookings).
Naturally, the wine list is extensive - St. Veran, Gigondas, Gavi di Gavi, Chablis Premier Cru etc. - but not too pricey: a large merlot was £4.20, only 20p more than house red. House champagne is sold at £6 per flute, whilst London Pride is the sole bitter on offer. Menu-wise, their pizzas seem the most popular, but the lunchtime specials (e.g. farfalle with peppers and chestnut mushrooms in roquefort sauce) are tempting. They are also currently offering certain meal deals. Conclusion? We wish we had tried it earlier.
