George Orwell is working hard

Always good to see someone making a good go of things - and the current landlord of the Orwell does indeed seem to be working hard at it.
It's always been a bit of a difficult spot, not quite Islington proper, not quite Highbury and a little too far up Essex Road to catch the upper Street crowd. Anyone taking this one on has got their work cut out for them. Successive refurbishments have ripped this one time rough boozer to shreds and now there really isn't much left of the original interior.
A small bar sits alone, surrounded by a mix of Chesterfields and old tables, but the place feels a bit sparse generally. It's a bit more trendy bar than trad pub, really. It was a little quiet when we were in last, but then we were in early.
Decent, well kept beer from south London (Wandle on both taps) combined with friendly service and genial locals made it feel quite relaxed and more welcoming.
