It has it's own art gallery upstairs and the stripped out bar with visible cooking area and the Farrow and Ball paint job mark it down as Deeply Hip.

But they also attempt the difficult trick of being a friendly local where you can just stop in and read the paper, have a chat, a beer, and (before the smoking ban comes in) a fag.

We applaud the effort even if we're not entirely sure they bring this combination off.

The food is very, very good and probably worth a visit just for that, but how many people come to this one just for a drink and a natter?

Still, if you're going to go to a gastropub you may as well give a look to the Daddy of them all.
