Picking up at Pembury

14 January 2008
So new was the Pembury Tavern when we reviewed it in early 2006 that the emulsion was practically still drying on the walls.
A real ale enthusiasts favourite owned by the excellent Milton Brewery (who also run the Oakdale in Haringey), our initial visit found it too clinical - a big space with lots of hard wood surfaces that left us (metaphorically) rather cold.
So now with two further return visits under our belts we're happy to see thing continue to improve. It's a positive sign that trade has picked up (it could get deathly quiet at times) and it's proving popular with a younger crowd. Personal touches are appearing, such as scores of beer mats on the walls from the guest ales which have featured in their worthwhile mini-festivals.
Bar Billiards and pool are also good to see and the kitchen serves up some fine looking food. They've got a lot right here and it seems they're travelling slowly but surely on the right track - some soft furnishings, or perhaps a few plants would still be nice to see, though.
