Plenty of choice at The Charles Lamb
21 October 2008
The Charles Lamb boasts a good back street setting and a distinctly French influence and feels pretty continental.
Having kept the original two room layout, old advertising signs are scattered about and flowers and candles adorn the tables. Add a great choice of ales on the hand pumps along with bottles of St. Peter's Organic Best and Breton cider and it all seems rather idyllic.
We've commented on its diminutive size before, but they seem to have addressed the crowding issues - it feels like a lot of bars on the continent. Its popularity does mean that getting a seat can be difficult at times, but it's worth the effort for the beer alone. And if you're feeling peckish, the lamb pasty is spot on for a snack - it is a snack, as it's a little on the diminutive side (we could easily have eaten two of them when we were there last). The only confusion we've got is that with so many continental influences, it still calls itself a "traditional pub". Nonetheless, it's worth a look.
