Pontefract Castle serves a decent pint

A large pub on several floors, it tends to get packed with office workers weekday evenings, shoppers during opening times at weekends and then shop workers relaxing after the day's mayhem.

The layout is designed to get as many people in as possible (especially the ground floor) so it's not really a place for a relaxing pint. Though as it's Nicholson's, it does serve a decent pint, with Tribute and Doom bar on when we were in last - they do know how to look after it.

It's also quite a handy place to meet up in as it's easy to find and there is food to sustain you if all that shopping has worn you down. One thing that still perplexes us is the downstairs bar.

Called Fernando's Hideaway, it seems to be done in a Spanish style and available for hire, while it has the advantage of often being quieter when the rest of the pub is heaving.
