Popular White Cross is pleasing
06 October 2008
In Richmond, on a warm summer's evening, everyone wants to be by the river and the White Cross is where they come.
Drinkers, hordes of them, milling between the water's edge and the pub, occupying a space that gets steadily less accommodating as the tide comes in (there's even a high side entrance, should the tide swamp the front of the pub).
A pair of terraces also help manage the crowds, but these fill up quickly on fine days.
Inside the pub, there's a central bar where the staff work quickly, politely and efficiently on all sides to service the demand for the excellent Young's beer and, ironically, if it is a fine day it's usually not difficult to find a seat inside.
The kitchen works non-stop to keep the hungry sated and there's a paging system to let you know your food's ready, wherever you are.
It's a well-known and easy-to-find pub in a picturesque setting so it's popularity potential is never in doubt, but it is particularly pleasing that it continues to be a proper pub and not the cliché tourist trap it so could easily be.
