Roebuck has a leafy beer garden
05 August 2009
Until the end of 2008, the Roebuck was run by Mitchell and Butler, as part of their upmarket unbranded chain.
We liked it then, but they decided to sell it to Wells and Young's, who have kept the general upmarket feel to the place; it is Hampstead, after all.
As such, apart from the choice of standard Young's beers on tap, you'd be hard pushed to work out who owns it. There's a good selection of areas to sit in the main bar, ranging from open tables to private nooks; some of the retro looking chairs are exceptionally comfortable and don't jar with the remaining vestiges of the pub's Victorian past.
Elsewhere, you'll find something called Fawn's Cocktail Bar (get the connection?) down in the basement and an attractive conservatory out the back. The leafy beer garden is perfect to soak up some sun and get some exercise, as some of the wooden seats are so heavy, you might need help to move them.
Overall, the feeling is luxuriant but welcoming and better than a number of recent Young's refurbishments.
NEAREST STATION: Hampstead Heath station
FEATURES: Real ales - all Wells and Young's, function room available, traditional pub games, open after 11:00pm, outdoor seating, quiz night Tuesday, separate restaurant
