Smart little boozer

12 November 2007
When we heard news that the William Wallace was no more, we assumed - given the exclusive flats being built next door - it would change from Caledonian boozer into another copycat gastropub.
Certainly any last vestiges of the Wallace - such as the life-size cut out of Braveheart Gibson - have been cleared away, yet the result is a smart little boozer that has more of a traditional pub feel than its location may suggest.
Although the selection of beers may not set the pulses racing (though we've never had a problem with the Greene King nor the Spitfire here) the straightforward pub grub certainly does the job (note that its ingredients are sourced from local stores such as the Ginger Pig and La Fromagerie). When we first visited this one after its refit in 2006 we were impressed with how this one was setting out its stall.
Visiting it again, we can see this one is proving a popular spot for the local workers. Fingers crossed, it may even fit into the concept of 'Marylebone Village' the flats being bit around the pub are aiming towards. We'd like to think so, as the character and appearance (and success) of The Gunmakers shows you don't have to aim for gastropub uniformity if you want to turn a pub around.
