The Anchor Tap has an intimate feel

Tucked away in the alleys of Shad Thames this is a genial and ever hospitable little Sam Smiths.

True to form, they have kept this pub as it always has been resulting in a pub that the words 'nooks' and 'crannies' could have been invented for.

There are four separate rooms, including two games rooms - one for darts and quiz machines, and one for pool - a piano room, and a room for simply pinting in as well as the main bar area, yet despite this the pub maintains an intimate feel.

The staff here are invariably excellent; one long-serving barman stands out for his ability to serve numerous rounds on the bounce while still affording a friendly word for each of his punters.

The locals are warm and friendly too - the £1-a-throw numbers lottery pinned to the wall a telling testament to their seats at the bar.

Out the back there are plenty of places to perch and it has never been a problem bagging a seat when we've dropped in.

In all, lots to recommend it in an area where there is little else to recommend.
