The Pembroke is proud of its gastropub status

Once a landmark in this part of town, as the Coleherne, it was a famous (or infamous, perhaps) gay pub. So famous, we suspect it was the pub Armisted Maupin used in his Tales of the City series.
But that's all gone now and a new clientele has moved into the extensively gastrofied pub. It's got a decent, and not terribly expensive menu, interesting beer on the taps - try the Edelweiss Wheat beer, available by the jug, apparently - as well as three hand pumps with regular guest ales. It's also got a reasonable wine list.
This is a gastropub, plain and simple, but at least it's honest about it. And the punters don't seem to mind, tucking into the upmarket nuts and crisps with abandon. So, with a regular clientele and DJs in the upstairs bar, or board games for those boring evenings, they're doing a lot right. It's not the old Coleherne anymore, but no one there seemed to be missing it.
