The Smithfield Tavern feels like a traditional pub

Having reclaimed its name, this pub - for that's what it is - hasn't followed the current trend for stripped out style bars and appears to be intent on continuing life as a pub. Good.
We're pleased about that, as there are quite enough of those sorts of places in the area. Don't get us wrong, it's modern, and there are the obligatory sofas scattered around, but it doesn't feel like anything other than a traditional pub.
The food looks good, if a bit pricier than your average pub grub. We particularly like the fact that the fish finger sandwich comes with tartar sauce, rather than anything that's been mucked about with. Good beer on the taps, Flowers IPA and Bombardier when we were in last, two kinds of cider and a perry as well as a selection of lager, so you won't be spoiled for choice.
It also looks like they've got lots of events on, ranging from cabaret to DJ nights, to showing events on the big screen telly. Beyond being in the same building, it bears little resemblance to its predecessors, and that's a good thing. It's off to a good start and worth a look if you're in the area.
