Trendy makeover at the Alwyne Castle

25 March 2008
Formerly a very average boozer, the Alwyne Castle has been given the trendy bar makeover so beloved of its owners, Mitchells and Butler. It has many of the trademark features of their early 21st century conversions (you know the sort: polished wood floor, comfy sofas, overpriced food menu), but it has kept the great fireplace and mercifully decided against polished chrome fittings.
The service is friendly, albeit sometimes scant, and there are a couple of ales on tap, along with a good choice of lager. It's a rangy place, with three large rooms, including a conservatory, but the badly laid out furniture makes it feel slightly less cohesive then it should be.
As with most pubs, its more relaxed earlier in the week, while Saturday night can find it verging on uncomfortably full. On match days you'll find the pub absolutely heaving with your drink served in a plastic container.
