The Wheatsheaf reopened in 2002 after a period of closure when the building was threatened by demolition to make way for a railway viaduct. Thankfully, that plan was shelved after a campaign by Borough Market Association. Six years down the line though, the developers have got their way and this fine boozer is to be demolished in January 2009 as part of the upgrade of the Thameslink project. So if you want to catch this one, you'd best be quick.
Why bother? Well, the pub may be on the bare side (stripped floors and pew-style seats) but it serves an excellent pint and the inexpensive grub is pretty good too, made with fresh produce from Borough Market.
This one is predictably busy on market days, especially so after it closes, as many of the market workers choose this one over the other local pubs. Add in some arty, Bohemian regulars and a great landlord and it is a pub with a friendly and lively atmosphere. Go there and sample it before the bulldozers roll in.
