St John - full review
26 St John Street, EC1 (020 7251 0848)
If there were a headquarters for British food, this would be it. Fergus Henderson has been championing the best kind of simple British cooking since 1994. The signature dish is roast bone marrow and parsley salad, or opt for something equally delicious such as the beef mince on dripping toast. The superb homemade Eccles cakes are worth a detour. £35pp ex-drinks.
The Rivington - book online
28 Rivington Street, EC2 (020 7729 7053
A lively bar and restaurant in Shoreditch. The menu is driven by the seasons and the kitchen sources the best of British produce. Look out for the dishes to share such as the roast Goosnargh chicken with sage-and-onion stuffing and roast potatoes for two, or make up a party to feast on a whole suckling pig. £30pp ex-drinks.
Inn the Park - full review
St James's Park, SW1 (020 7451 9999)
At last someone's taking breakfast seriously. Choose from five kinds of bacon ranging from Suffolk unsmoked back bacon to Rhug Estate dry cured organic streaky, three different black puddings including one from Stornoway, and three different eggs. Full English, £10.50; generally £30pp ex-drinks.
Anchor and Hope - full review
36 The Cut, SE1 (020 7928 9898)
This busy gastropub shares a lot of its philosophy with St John. The cooking here is very genuine and you could expect dishes like crab on toast, or order up a Lancashire hotpot to feed six. Due to a no-bookings policy the queues can be frustrating. £25pp ex-drinks.
Roast - full review and book online
The Floral Hall, Borough Market, Stoney Street, SE1 (020 7940 1300)
High above Borough Market, Roast is a beautiful restaurant with an upfront obsession with British dishes. You can try Carmarthen ham; Dorset dressed crab; black pudding hash; or go for a sirloin steak from a pampered Welsh Black steer. Busy place, best to book. £25pp ex-drinks.
