Critic's choice: three classic gastropubs
04 April 2007
The Eagle - full review
159 Farringdon Road, EC1
The grand-daddy of all gastropubs, the Eagle is still banging out decent food, good ales and wines. The service is traditionally a bit angsty, but the prices are fair and the crowds speak volumes.
£22pp ex-drinks. (020 7837 1353)
The Victoria - full review & online booking
10 West Temple Sheen, SW14
This is a neighbourhood stalwart, a well-established gastropub with reliable food, much loved by local buggy-pushers as a lunch spot. There are bedrooms for those wanting B&B.
£30pp ex-drinks. (020 8876 4238)
The Engineer - full review
65 Gloucester Avenue, NW1
People scrap to get a seat in the courtyard at this seasoned gastropub. Service is sound, there is a passable range of beers and the food is perfectly tailored to the surroundings. £28pp exdrinks. (020 7722 0950)
