Delicious Valentine's Day dates

Make a meal of it with London's most romantic restaurants...

Best for classic couples

Babbo
You can't go wrong with an Italian meal, and this Mayfair favourite continues to win plaudits. The setting is elegant, the waiters are convivial and the food is fantastic. It's been popular with media types for some time, and the lasagne is legendary. The restaurant also serves a very unique sweet, creamy burrata. But it's the familiar, friendly but classy atmosphere that really sells Babbo. 32 Albemarle Street, W1. Valentine's menu is £52 for four courses. Visit babborestaurant.co.uk or call 020 3205 1099

Best for carnivorous passion

Cut at 45 Park Lane
Tucking into a juicy burger with a side of fries hardly sounds like fodder for a first date, but if Wolfgang Puck is in the kitchen it's a different story. His steaks are expensive (£85 for a Waygu cut from Chile) but they are fabulous. The restaurant space is sharp and slick, with Damien Hirst's butterfly prints decorating the walls. If you want to impress with both restaurant knowledge and wallet, this is the place to book. 45 Park Lane, Mayfair, W1. Happy Valentine's Day menu is £135 for four courses including champagne. Visit 45parklane.com or call 020 7493 4545

Best for nostalgic love affairs

British Pullman
Train stations and carriages have often been used as the settings for romantic trysts, and a steam-hauled dinner date is a quirky alternative to a sit-down, stationary meal. Operated by Orient-Express, the British Pullman will be offering five-course lunches and dinners on two special journeys through the countryside. For a special occasion, it's possible to request a private compartment away from the main carriage From £300-£350 per person on February 14. Visit orient-express.com/uktrains or call 0845 077 2222
