Five places to eat curry

Charles Campion gives us his round-up of the five best curry houses in London...

Memsaheb on Thames Restaurant
65-67 Amsterdam Road, London E14 (020 7538 3008, memsaheb.net)
At the recent Bangladeshi Catering Association Awards Dinner (which was held to celebrate the BCA's 50th anniversary and the 200th anniversary of curry in Britain) Memsaheb on Thames won the award for "London East". Memsaheb is known for excellent fish and seafood dishes and a magnificent "kitchen curry" — the staff meal here is so good that it has made it onto the main menu, where it remains a firm favourite.

Mint Leaf
4 Suffolk Place, W1 (020 7930 9020, mintleafrestaurant.com)
Glossy and slick, with fine cocktails and sophisticated food, Mint Leaf won the BCA award for "London West" restaurant. Try the lamb bhuna with whole spices or the chicken leg that is braised with methi.

Quilon
41 Buckingham Gate, SW1 (020 7821 1899, quilon.co.uk)
At the UK National Restaurant Awards, Quilon was the top-placed Indian restaurant, coming in at number 53. Specialising in south-west Indian coastal cuisine, chef Sriram Aylur has won a Michelin star. His long menu features regional specialities including some excellent curries, plus a fascinating beer list.

Hot Stuff
19 Wilcox Road, Vauxhall, SW8 (020 7720 1480, eathotstuff.com)
A small, jolly, cheap, family run, BYO Indian restaurant that is well off the beaten track. Hot Stuff serves honest curries to appreciative regulars. At this time of year there is sometimes a splendid lamb and pumpkin curry.

Brilliant Restaurant
72-76 Western Road, Southall, Middlesex (020 8574 1928, brilliantrestaurant.com)
Despite a narrow loss on Gordon Ramsay's TV programme Brilliant continues to do what it does best: authentic, often spicy, curries that reflect its East African Asian heritage. Try curries like methi chicken or palak lamb, and enjoy its glamorous bustle.
