Going Ga Ga for Sushi
05 August 2010
Reviewing an eight-seater restaurant for the hundreds of thousands of Evening Standard readers seemed mean, so I also went to the recently opened Sushi Ga Ga, which replaces Okawari in Lisle Street.
A modern interior with video screens on one wall, not many of the staff or customers were Japanese. My request to sit where two women were about to leave was turned down on the grounds that it was a table for five or six but later the waiter relented. When asked for chilled sake, he brought warm. When asked for edamame beans in kimchi sauce, he brought kimchi.
For ease of communication we chose "New Wave" sushi and sashimi at £28 to share. So lacklustre the fish, so cold and claggy the rice, so etiolated and mingy the sashimi and the whole assembly so lacking in any definition of nouvelle vague, that my London restaurant critic companion — to preserve her identity I will call her Lady Ma Ma — suggested we pay up (luckily half-price promotion for food still obtaining) and go to the lovely bar at Sheekey’s for a drink. So we did.
