Little Bay is tucked away on Farringdon Road and there were only two other tables filled while we were there.

Inside, there's something of an identity crisis: as well as huge plaster replicas of imposing Greek statuary - a nod to Peter Illic's other restaurant, the high-camp LMNT in Dalston - and a faux cave effect in one corner, there are large, brightlycoloured abstract flowers on the walls, and jolly handwritten (and woefully misspelt) menus reminiscent of a friendly neighbourhood cafè.

Said menus offer a wide range of starters (all £2.95) and mains (all £7.95) with the emphasis on seafood. The fresh salmon with salad was pleasant, if uninspiring; the pressed goat's cheese terrine and beetroot salad was more of a success, with an extra kick courtesy of added chillies.

My companion was slightly fazed by her main course of duck with red cabbage and apple - I have a feeling this is the dish our waitress was referring to when she looked through the hatch and asked the chef: 'What is this?'.

My cod with sweet paprika, oyster mushrooms and white wine was a winner, but my downfall came when I grabbed one of the 'French fries' (actually fat greasy chip-shop chips) and discovered it was so hot it took the skin off the roof of my mouth.

The requested soothing glass of water came with added lemon, mint leaves and strawberry slices (go figure) - the pain was finally relieved by a delicious vanilla and blackberry pannacotta with strawberry coulis.

With a bottle of wine and some camomile tea, the bill came to £42.55 (excluding service) - more in the friendly cafè league after all, then.
