Maze, Grosvenor Square, triumphed in the annual Time Out Eating And Drinking Awards for the charm of its staff, its atmosphere and, of course, the food.
The judging panel was particularly taken by its "peanut butter and cherry jam sandwich with salted nuts and cherry sorbet" which was described as "the most unexpectedly lovely dessert we've ever had".
Shochu Lounge, Charlotte Street, was best bar for being "wonderfully original".
Fish Club in Clapham, inspired by some of Australia's new-wave fish and chip shops, won the best cheap eats award. The judges said: "Stand-outs were gorgeously smoky grilled sardines and whole grilled sea bass with chips and baby leaf salad." Main courses start at £7.50.
London's best gastropub was The Gun, Canary Wharf, where a sandwich filled with Old Spot bacon, eggs and brown sauce was considered the best the judges had ever had.
