When Redmond and Pippa Hayward opened this small neighbourhood restaurant it was head and shoulders above anything else the locale had to offer.

A few years down the line and 'Barnes, Sheen&Kew' may not quite be a match for Soho, but there is an increasing number of decent places to eat.

Redmond's is one of the best, propelled by a telling combo of very good cooking and reasonable prices.

They tweak the menu on a daily basis, so it reflects the best of what the season and the markets have to offer.

The dinner menu is not particularly short - about six or seven starters and mains - and proves astonishing value.

There is also a very competitive 'early' menu running until 19.45.

What's even more agreeable is an absence of supplements.

And the food here really is very good indeed: well seasoned, precisely cooked, presented elegantly.

If the 'pork Hors d'oeuvres' is available when you visit, pounce.

Redmond's charcuterie is accomplished; or there may be curried parsnip soup; or a galette of Jerusalem artichokes and shallots.

Main courses combine dominant flavours with elegant presentation - roast fillet of organic salmon with wild mushrooms; pan-fried sea bass with crushed new potatoes sauce vierge; or slow-braised oxtail with parsnip mash.

The puddings also impress: crème brélée; banana tarte Tatin with vanilla ice cream; or bread and butter pudding with rum and cinnamon.

The wine list is littered with interesting bottles at accessible prices - and some particularly good halves.
