Where to book for Bastille Day

In celebration of Bastille Day, here are the French restaurants in London that are worth paying a visit...

Mon Plaisir
19-21 Monmouth Street, WC2
(020 7836 7243, monplaisir.co.uk)

Mon Plaisir is an old-timer that continues to be Frencher than French — wonder at the bar, which allegedly came from a Lyonnais brothel. On Bastille Day, July 14, you can expect honest French food plus a roving accordionist.

Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec
140 Newington Butts, SE11
(020 7582 6800, brasserie toulouselautrec.co.uk)

This unpretentious and exceedingly French brasserie is organising a special dinner for Bastille Day. There will be live music — "Chansons Françaises"— starting at 7.30pm and a memory lane, four-course dinner for £29.50 per person. "Snails with lardons in a cream sauce, served in a puff pastry case; prawns brochette with garlic butter; duck à l'orange with fondant potatoes" and finally "crêpe stuffed with crème brûlée served with raspberry coulis".

Angelus
4 Bathurst Street, W2 (020 7402 0083, angelusrestaurant.co.uk)

At Angelus, the July 14 menu will be available until July 21. It's classic bourgeois French cooking — choose from three starters, three mains, then two puds or cheese. £30 for three courses or £38.50 to include half a bottle of wine, water, coffee and petits fours.

Le Café du Marché
22 Charterhouse Square, EC1 (020 7608 1609, cafedumarche.co.uk)

This nest of three restaurants is hidden away close to Smithfield (as well as the café there is Le Rendezvous and Le Grenier du Café) and they have been serving traditional French food to happy regulars since 1986. For the Francophile it's the perfect place to celebrate Quatorze Juillet.

Le Vacherin
76-77 South Parade, W4
(020 8742 2121, levacherin.co.uk)

Chef proprietor Malcolm John is a Frenchman trapped in an Englishman's body. Expect good, simple French cooking at this Chiswick favourite. To celebrate July 14, go for his "France for under a tenner" deal. Steak frites plus a glass of Duras Cabernet for £9.95 — available for lunch Tuesday-Sunday, and every evening between 6 and 8pm excluding Friday and Saturday. This option runs until July 31.
