Where to eat in a gastropub in N1

Charles Campion gives his views on five of the best gastropubs in N1:

The House
Since it made the leap from dodgy local to posh gastropub, The House has managed to build a reputation for good cooking even if it also has form for somewhat unforgiving prices. The signature dish is an excellent shepherd's pie which has lurked on the menu since day one.
63-69 Canonbury Road, N1 (020 7704 7410, www.inthehouse.biz)

The Drapers Arms
This pub changed hands recently. As well as cosmetic changes there is a new chef (ex-St John) in the kitchen. His menus are agreeably seasonal and make the most of local produce: globe artichokes, beetroot, red chard and salted red onions. There is also a pleasant courtyard for al fresco meals.
44 Barnsbury Street, N1 (020 7619 0348, www.thedrapersarms.com)

The Charles Lamb
A small, friendly pub with a relaxed atmosphere that makes it seem curiously old-fashioned. There is a decent array of beers and notable bar snacks. The blackboard offers unfussy dishes and good value: rillettes and potted crab always appeal, or how about a traditional pie or goats' cheese pear and walnut salad?
16 Elia Street, N1 (020 7837 5040,

The Albion
Something of a picture-postcard pub — a Georgian building with a large garden and comfortable atmosphere. The beer is sound and the food is commendably British and unfussy — it has won prizes for its Sunday lunch.
10 Thornhill Road, N1 (020 7607 7450, www.the-albion.co.uk)

The Duke of Cambridge
This place was trumpeting its organic credentials long before such matters were fashionable and was the first pub ever to get Soil Association recognition. This ethical stance comes at a slightly higher price but the cooking is sound.
30 St Peter's Street, N1 (020 7359 3066, www.dukeorganic.co.uk)
