The Café Below, St Mary-le-Bow Church, Cheapside, EC2 (020 7329 0798, www.cafebelow.co.uk)

Hung Tao, 51 Queensway, W2 (020 7229 6065, www.hungtao.co.uk)

If you feel that Scottish porridge is for wimps, try congee. This Chinese rice porridge is a breakfast dish reputed to be good for hangovers. At Hung Tao on Queensway, choose from nine options, ranging from "preserved egg and sliced pork congee" (£4.80) to "sliced fish with pork kidney congee" (£5.70). Either makes the tartan version seem tame. Available 11am-11pm.
