Where to eat smartly in Belgravia

For decades Salloos has managed to be both seriously chic and seriously pricey and Zafferano has been serving up top-level Italian dishes.

Salloos
For decades Salloos has managed to be both seriously chic and seriously pricey. This place is something of a rarity in London, a genuine high-end Pakistani restaurant. Ultra-traditional dishes like haleem are given a makeover to turn them into sophisticated options, while the tandoori lamb chops have an International reputation.
62-64 Kinnerton Street, SW1

Zafferano
Since the day it opened in 1995 Zafferano has been serving up top-level authentic Italian dishes — food so good that it holds a Michelin star (an award made all the more remarkable by the fact that the head chef of this fine Italian establishment is an Englishman). Zafferano may not be the cheapest restaurant around but it is very good.
15 Lowndes Street, SW1 (020 7235 5800, www.zafferanorestaurant.com)

Amaya
A dark, luxurious, elegant restaurant that calls for a serious reappraisal of Indian food. Here you really can eat like a mogul as the menu leads you through a series of fascinating and intriguing kebabs. Graze your way through a tempting array of small and classical dishes. An eye-opener.
Halkin Arcade, Motcomb Street, SW1 (020 7823 1166, www.amaya.biz)

Palm 1
The first Palm steakhouse saw daylight in the 1920s and since then the concept has been successfully exported around the world, docking in Belgravia during summer 2009. American steaks and lobsters, signature starters such as a huge chunk of iceberg lettuce, and French fries are served up amid the US-style decor at merciless prices. Rich and homesick New Yorkers are happy here.
Pont Street, SW1 (020 7201 0710, www.thepalm.com/london)

The Pantechnicon Rooms
In a past life this was a rough pub beloved of rugby players. In spring 2009 it emerged from a monster refurb as a slick gastropub pushing most of the right buttons and serving modern British food. Bar snacks on ground level, posher dining room upstairs.
10 Motcomb Street, SW1 (020 7730 6074, www.thepantechnicon.com)
