Beauty spot: dip-dye hair

It appears crazy dye jobs aren't reserved for jeans and hippies, and Drew Barrymore is proof.

She turned heads at the premiere of her directorial debut Whip It in Toronto with her hair dip-dyed with jet black ends, suggesting statement hair may be making a comeback.

Achieving a bold block colour takes expertise and precision, so this is not one to try at home, unless you want to risk looking like Cruella De Vil. If you want to experiment, make an appointment with your colourist — and be prepared to lop your hair off above the dye-line when you're fed up with it, because only permanent dyes will do.

Clare Lodge, artistic director at Paul Edmonds London, explains: “You need a permanent colour to avoid the colour running up the hair shaft. To make it more user-friendly, most colourists would recommend a more subtle combination than Drew's.

Golden blondes can go for soft apricot through the tips and brunettes could try aubergine. For the more daring, blondes can try neon shades and brunettes can try cool blues.” Definitely not one for wall-flowers.
