What L'Etranger is a chic restaurant with a French and Japanese menu - think foie gras and tempura. The décor is delicious, too: smart grey and lilac interior with oak floors. Locals guard it jealously.
What to order Steak tartare followed by black cod, £10 cheaper than Nobu for almost double the portion.
Cost About £40 for three courses without wine.
Best time to go Early in the week - bustling even on Monday night.

What New Zealand powerhouse Peter Gordon whips up a global storm at this W1 staple. Upstairs is the fine dining restaurant, downstairs is the Tapa Room, for breakfast, brunch and light bites.
What to order Roast Gressingham duck breast on massaman curry lentils, and plantain coconut fritter with baba ganoush.
Cost Two courses for £29 without wine.
Best time to go Saturday night, upstairs, or Sunday brunch.

Best time to go Thursdays, when the creatives party.
