What This Islington watering hole does a roaring trade despite its tucked-away location, thanks to its sprawling garden. Winner of the Best Sunday Lunch 2009 venue in the UK, there's a delicious barbecue menu, serving whatever's fresh in the market that morning.
Order Rare roast beef and sticky toffee sundae.

The Avalon

What The Avalon's south-facing terraced garden is a muchneeded oasis in the heart of Balham. Set over three levels, there's plenty of space, lots of greenery and even a Roman-style tiered fountain. From Thursday to Sunday there's a delicious Mediterranean grill.
Order Marinated poussin and tabbouleh.
Costs £17 for two courses, excluding drinks.
Best time to go Friday evenings.

What This charming West London pub has been serving ales since 1835. At the back is a delightfully unkempt, stone-paved garden warmed by free-standing heaters (blankets are also available). It's the perfect spot to enjoy a hearty plate of British food and a draught beer in the evening sunshine.
Order Ploughman's and baked vanilla cheesecake.
