O2’s inspirational business of the week

O2 and the Evening Standard are searching for the most inspirational small business in London – a business like Bodyflow set up in 2001 by Gemma Ireland, 32 after a life-changing trip to Malawi when she helped someone after a serious fall.

Simply tell the judges what made you start up on your own and the most inspirational business in the judges' opinion will win the O2 Inspiration Award and an advertising campaign worth £100,000+.

Gemma, where did you get your idea?

Ten years of sitting at a desk with aches and pains helped me spot a gap in the market – office chair massage to de-stress City staff. That quickly led to home therapies – yoga, pilates, reflexology and massage.

How did you get started?

I gave someone an Indian Head Massage after a terrible accident and they told me I had "healing hands". Two weeks later I enrolled on a reflexology course, then on another learning Japanese acupressure chair massage. I kept working until I built up enough clients through word of mouth to start in business full-time. I now have over 40 therapists and practitioners working for Bodyflow.

What keeps you inspired?

The look on someone's face after I have eased their aching back and news that one of my clients is pregnant – I use reflexology to help with fertility.

Win an advertising campaign for your business worth £100,000+

Did you have a talent for something that led to a business?

Simply tell the judges - which include successful entrepreneurs Adam Balon innocent drinks, Karen Darby founder of Simply Switch and Evening Standard Business Editor Chris Blackhurst – what inspired you to set up your businesses, where you got your idea and how you did it.

One in three business owners is planning to work fewer hours next year and half intend to spend more time with their family according to a survey out this week. Not surprising - half work more than 50 hours a week. Are you getting the balance right? Join the debate click here
