Introducing... Glowacka Rennie Architects

ES Magazine
22 May 2009

Watch out, Zaha Hadid. Agnieszka Glowacka and Eleanor Rennie have founded their own architecture firm and have, most recently, designed the ladies' loos at the V&A...

Agnieszka Glowacka and Eleanor Rennie, both 32, met at The Bartlett School of Architecture and founded their company Glowacka Rennie in 2004, after winning the Landmark East competition with a design for a coastal community protected by inhabited sea defences.

They have since designed wetland visitor centres in Norway and Ireland, café pavilions in Rotherham and Deal, and, most recently, the ladies' loos at the V&A.

Born in Wroclaw, Poland, Agnieszka lives with her husband and son in Brixton, while Eleanor, who was raised in Glasgow, lives with her boyfriend in King's Cross.

What's London's most inspirational space?
AG
Kensington Roof Gardens. Flamingoes, palm trees, fountains - on a summer's night it's like going on holiday.
ER The Hayward Gallery: it is a malleable landscape that can change with the exhibitions it hosts. Last year the roof became a boating lake for Psycho Buildings. I love buildings that transform.

If you could design any sort of structure what would it be?
AG
The Serpentine Pavilion.
ER A boat would be really fun.

What is special about your loo?
AG
It is more of a gallery that happens to have a toilet in it.

What's next?
ER
We're opening an office in Abu Dhabi, where the construction industry has remained buoyant. As a young design practice there we will be fairly unique.

As a recently retired (ethnic minority) lady architect I am intrigued by your decision to open an office in Abu Dhabi. I may be totally wrong but have you considered the very pro-male attitudes of the society there which may certain aspects of working there very difficult, if not totally impossible? Perhaps they are not so gender biased with younger women. I would be very pleased to know how you get on , if you have time do let me know.
