The growing pains of Movember

Emma McCarthy
25 Nov 2011

With just one week to grow, London's Mo Bros are out in force. The hairy top-lipped men of Movember - a campaign which hopes to "change the face of men's health" and raise awareness for prostate cancer through moustache growth - have been proudly neglecting their shaving kits to raise a spot of 'tache cash for charity.

But all good things must come to an end, and the month of Movember culminates with hotly anticipated special events. Tonight, Mo Bros dress to suit their 'taches at the London Gala Parté while competing for the titles of Best Mo in Character, Team Mo and the highest accolade, Man of Movember 2011. Tomorrow, Covent Garden marks the starting point for the London Rugby Tweed Run - sponsored by Murdock barbers - which sees 300 dapper chaps taking to their vintage bicycles for a leisurely, slow-motion race through the capital. Finally, there is the Arts Theatre Comedy Gala next Wednesday, presented by Pall Mall Barbers, who hope to raise thousands through ticket sales.

With all manner of men and growing capabilities roaming our streets - from Tom Selleck full bushes to Hulk Hogan horseshoes and several wispy schoolboy sprouts - I went to central London to discuss the growing pains and worth of the newly formed facial hair and whether these Mo Bros will be growing or mowing come December.

Movember men

1) Jon Wiltshire, 23, student from Old Street. Raised £5
"My girlfriend hates it due to some technical kissing issues. I want to keep it and grow a walrus, like Nietzsche"

2) Robb Crafer, 29, make-up artist from Ealing.
"I've had mine since last Movember. I wash, wax and tong it every day - yes, I do often burn my face"

3)Matthew Hughes, 23, junior barber at Murdock Covent Garden, from East Finchley. Raised £2,000, collectively

"Treat your 'tache like you treat your hair -take good care of it and wear it with pride. It's definitely staying; I want to get a curl going"

4) Andy Kingston, 26, account manager from Dulwich. Raised £100

"I'm hoping for another £50. I've had mixed reviews from friends - half think it's cool, half think it looks stupid"

5) Benjamin Johnstone, 33, technology teacher from Hackney. Raised £75

"The office is on target for £1,500. I feel it's a dashing RAF look, but I'll be back to being a boy in December"

6)Stephen Martin, 22, barber at Murdock Covent Garden, from Wembley

"I went with the horseshoe because I figured if you're going to do something, do it right"

7) Pete Murphy, 36, production manager from Southend. Raised £500

"I started off looking like
Ian Beale and ended up like Ming the Merciless"

8) David Page, 29, musician from Blackheath

"It makes me feel very grown-up and my wife likes it. I'll keep it for the winter for warmth"

It takes relatively thin lips to look appealing a good mustache. Otherwise, most men with facial hair look like fish gasping for their last breath.
Unless you have horrible acne scars or some other dermatological issue, I personally like my men like busts of a Caesars -> give me clean-shaven men who have the manners to shave twice a day. That is a face any woman is proud to snuggle up to without whisker burns on her tender skin.

Can someone explain how growing a mustache "raises" money? Where does the money come from and why?
