Pair apples with cheese
This year's English apple season is running a little late. There's a huge crop — good weather earlier in the year — but not much sun latterly so the fruit is ripening late. Cheese specialist Neal's Yard is again offering traditional, and sometimes obscure, English apples from the Brogdale collection — there's nothing nicer than a hunk of mature Cheshire and a crisp apple. The selection varies from week to week but you could end up with a Norfolk Royal Russet, or Red Falstaff — a large, deep red, glossy apple that looks as if it has come straight from Sleeping Beauty. All the apples are £3.95 a kilo.

Feast on crab
Autumn is also the best possible time to eat crab. Brown crabs have revelled in a summer of rich feeding and are in tip- top order. They can grow to a massive 3kg but the best size for eating is 1-2 kg — any smaller and they're fiddly, any larger and they're tough. All you need as accompaniment is crusty bread and some rich mayonnaise. Save the brown shell meat to spread on toast. Magnificent Cornish crabs — up to 2kg each, £12.50 per kg.

Glow with this cherry
The latest wonder juice is made from the Montmorency cherry. Apparently it can help you look after your heart, boost your libido, and end up with a glowing skin! Cherrygood is the brand name and it comes as "Original", "Cherry and Berry" and "Cherrygood Light". Available from branches of Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco at £1.39 per litre, the key thing about Cherrygood is that the Original version tastes very good indeed, well balanced and fruity.
