The yoghurt locker
It's hard to remember the time when a pot of yoghurt was a treat rather than a medicine. Today's shelves are crammed wih "bio-active", low-fat, low-calorie varieties and those little one-shot bottles. Bonne Maman is a French company that makes rather good confiture — proper jam with a high fruit content and plenty of flavour — and now it has branched out into yoghurt. Dig into a pot of its creamy yoghurt and
you'll discover a base layer of Bonne Maman confiture. This may not scream "health benefits" but it tastes very good indeed. Bonne Maman yoghurts in strawberry, apricot or rhubarb flavours: £2.29/four 125g pots from branches of Waitrose only. waitrose.com
Bread of heaven
From this Monday, "Knead to know — the real bread starter" will be available from the Real Bread Campaign. This handbook has been written to help anyone who wants to set up a community bakery in their home, or indeed small commercial bakers who want to stop using additives and switch to making real bread. It features contributions from famous bakers including Richard Bertinet, Dan McTiernan and Andrew Whitley. It will be on sale first as a DF download, then as a printed book. The price is
likely to be about £15 with discounts for members of the Real Bread Campaign. For info: realbreadcampaign.org, twitter.com/RealBread, facebook.com/realbreadcampaign
Grand Canaria
Sometimes the simplest things are the most effective, and if you are resolved to be less self-indulgent in 2011, consider starting each day with a Canarino. This is an Italian remedy and consists of lemon peel in boiling water. You just shave the outside peel of a lemon into a tumbler of boiling water and allow it infuse — within a minute or so the drink will take on the yellow hue that gives it its name: "Canarino", or little canary. Be careful not to include any of the white pith, as that will make the drink bitter, and use top-quality Italian lemons. Organic, unwaxed, Amalfi lemons are £4.95 per kg from the Andreas Veg Company, 35 Turnham Green Terrace, W4 (020 8995 0140)
